Each week there are planned activites, these are linked to a topic i.e. circus, dinosaurs, robots, jungle etc (the children help us to decide on a topic), some of the activities are adult-led but most are child-led; the interests of the children are very important to us, we ask for their ideas and thoughts. We operate a free-play system where the children can choose what they would like to do during their time at Box Kids, the children can choose whether to take part in the planned activities or play with the wide selection of toys and games with have to offer i.e. arts and crafts, group/team games, cooking, physical play, role-play and long-term projects etc. There’s also plenty of time for playing and socialising with friends. We’ve a quiet area if the children wish to do their homework or have a rest after school. We have a laptop and two game consoles with mainly active games.
After School Club predominantly serves Box Primary School and Box Pre-School Playgroup but we have a limited number of places for children who attend Neston Primary School and Corsham Primary - Broadwood Site (due to transport limitations).
When collecting the children from Box School, we collect the Reception children from their classroom and meet the other children in the hall. From Septemner 2021 (due to the pandemic) we have started to meet the children in the playground for thier staggered finishing time; we either stay until all the children finish school or we spit into two groups so that the children finishing earlier do not need to wait. When walking to Box Kids from Box School the children wear pink hi-viz jackets with the club's name and number on and walk in pairs (older-younger), they walk in-between two members of staff if two staff are needed, if only one is needed the staff member goes at the back and the oldest child goes at the front. The school crossing is used and when in the Market Place a member of staff stands in the road to stop the traffic to enable the children to cross safely.
When picking up from Neston Primary and Broadwood School staff use the Club's vehicles, both have business insurance and have up to date insurance, MOT and services. If the children are 135cm or under they will use a booster/car seat to ensure they are safe in the car. All children are taught about being safe in the car and staff do not go anywhere until seatbelts are on. Key Stage 1 children are collected from their classrooms and Key Stage 2 children usually make their way to an agreed meeting point.
We ask that parents inform their child's teacher when their children will be going to Box Kids, otherwise schools will not release their children over to us.
School Clubs
If your child would like to join a club after school (BOX SCHOOL ONLY), we might be able to collect them after and escort them back to Box Kids. It is important that you check with us prior to booking your child on to the club, as this would only be doable if there are 3 members of staff are working and no other arrangements have been agreed.
Part of our Mission Statement is ‘We are an integral part of the local community & offer children the opportunities to broaden their outlook of the world around them by experiencing a wide range of social, artistic, and cultural activities’. In March 2017 we got in touch with the Activities Co-odinator at Brunel House to see if we could work together. Brunel House provides care for elderly people and specialises in nursing residential and dementia care.
Marianne, the activities coordinator from Brunel House and I feel that it is a great inter-generational project; they are really inspiring, and we feel that they have a lot to offer everyone. We visit once a month and spend an afternoon with some of the residents, partaking in crafts, games, singing and sometimes dancing. We are also Dementia Friends after taking part in a session with a Dementia Champion. We have been fundraising for the home, in 2017 we raise £300.00. If you watched the programme of Channel 4 about the children spending time in a care home, you will have seen the positive effects it had on everyone involved.
Weather permitting and numbers we try to get outdoors as much as possible i.e. playing at the Rec, and going for walks. We also make use of the small court yard outside the front of our building.
Snack & Mealtimes
After school we provide a snack to keep them going until tea time. As mentioned in About Us, we can provide the children with an evening meal to free up some time at home, this is chargeable at £1.60 extra per day. The meals are planned with help from the children to ensure the children will like the meals. We also find the children are more likely to try new foods when having their evening meal at Box Kids with other children and staff. We alter the menu for dietary and cultural requirements and encourage the children to try new foods, especially fruit, salad & vegetables.
